What BlueTooth adapters are supported with Motorola Phone Tools?
Motorola Phone Tools is designed to work with and install your phone with a
Motorola BlueTooth adapter.
It does however support working with the Widcomm,
Toshiba, and Intel Bluetooth stacks.
Your phone will already need to be paired
with your computer and show up as a modem in Control Panel in order for Motorola
Phone Tools to work with it.
It can't detect my phone
1. Can't detect my phone (model
supported)
These are the likely causes for this situation:
- Intermittent connection with P2K connector
The P2K connector
of the USB cable (the wide end that plugs into the phone) is known to have
problems with having a solid connection only intermittently.
The symptom
will be a loss of connectivity after bumping your phone on the desk, for
example, or not being able to communicate with the phone once it is plugged in.
Unplugging and plugging again usually resolves the problem.
- The model ID of your phone reflects some regional spin of the
phone that the Motorola Phone Tools team was not made aware of (for example,
"V220ens", note the 'ens' at the end).
In this case, you can select your
phone model manually (To choose your TAPI modem manually, press F6 at the
generic phone skin or right-click on the phone icon in the system tray and
choose Setup -> General setup. Under the communication tab, choose "Change
Modem") and then instruct Motorola Phone Tools that you want to manually choose
the phone profile. Choose the 'base' model for your phone (for example, a
"V220ens" user would choose "V220".)
2) Can't detect my phone (model supported,
mass storage phone)
In some cases, your phone might appear on
your system as a USB Mass Storage device, giving you access to the removable
memory card in your phone (for example: A780, E398, etc.)
Motorola Phone
Tools has the ability to switch your phone from mass storage mode to modem mode
automatically, but the process sometimes fails (especially due to "unsafe
removal" warnings by Windows 2000, etc.). If this happens, Motorola Phone Tools
will not be able to communicate with your phone.
To avoid this, switch
your phone into modem mode manually. Choose the "Connection" menu on your phone,
then "USB", and then "Data/Fax Connection".
I am having trouble installing or updating Motorola USB Modem drivers.
Motorola phones use the built-in Windows USB modem driver (usbser.sys) for
communication with MPT. The USBMOT2000.INF driver file (which comes with MPT)
lists the USB product IDs for Motorola phones and instructs Windows to use the
usbser.sys file with them.
Unfortunately, the drivers may not be
installed correctly for the phone in any of these situations:
- The
phone was plugged in before installing MPT and the user cancelled out of the
hardware wizard.
- The user had an old version of Motorola Phone Tools
(and thus an old version of the driver file) that did not contain the product ID
for a very new phone (for example, the E815). And, even after LiveUpdating to
the latest version of Motorola Phone Tools, the new driver file is not
installed.
Recently, AccessoryGeeks.com posted a driver installation tool on their
website, developed by Motorola, that will remove all instances of the old
drivers and any traces of previously installed phones. It will then install the
latest drivers and reinstall the phone, solving any issues. Click Here
My PC/Motorola Phone Tools can't find my phone and/or keeps breaking
communication with it.
This can happen for several reasons -
1) Incompatibility with USB hubs / docking
stations
Some Motorola phones, CDMA phones in particular, don't
like to be plugged in to USB hubs (which includes the ports on your laptop's
docking station).
If there is a problem, the symptom will be an entry in
Windows' Device Manager named "Unknown device" with an exclamation point next to
it while the phone is plugged in.
Try plugging the phone in directly as
possible to the machine as a possible solution.
2) Intermittent connection with P2K connector
The P2K connector of the USB cable (the wide end that plugs into
the phone) is known to have problems with having a solid connection only
intermittently.
The symptom will be a loss of connectivity after bumping
your phone on the desk, for example, or not being able to communicate with the
phone once it is plugged in.
Unplugging and plugging again usually
resolves the problem.
3)
Knockoff cables are not compatible
There are many USB cables on
the market (especially on eBay) that are not genuine Motorola USB cables. These
may contribute to a wide variety of connectivity problems with the phone.
In particular, there is a certain variety that really only acts as a
serial cable on the phone end with a USB converter on the PC end. These cables
*WILL NOT* function in Multimedia Studio as the phone will only enter file
transfer mode with a genuine USB connection.
This is typically caused by having security or antivirus software running such
as Norton Internet Security.
Disable this software then attempt to run the
LiveUpdater.
If this does not resolve the issue make sure you are not behind a
firewall and if you are, remove yourself from the firewall and run the update
again.
How do I create profiles for multiple phones?
1. Open Motorola Phone Tools with No phone connected to the computer
2. It
should then ask you to select your profile.
3. Click on New.
4. Name the
profile the model of the phone or if you have more than 1 of the same model name
it the person's name and model, Bob V400.
5. Then click OK and OK again
6. It should ask you to install a new device or you may have to click on
Redetect.
7. Select your connection method, USB or Bluetooth and click Next
8. Plug the phone into the computer and let it install it.
9. You will
do this for each phone.
Since Live Updating to 3.x or 4.x versions of Motorola Phone Tools, the program
no longer recognizes my serial connection to the phone
Have the Phone connected and then open Motorola Phone Tools, cancel the
installation wizard and then follow the steps below.
1. In Motorola
Phone Tools Go to the General Setup (or push F6 on your keyboard)
2. Go to
the Communication Tab
3. Click on Change Modem
4. Click Next
5. Make
sure the Modem driver is Highlighted and click next
6. Check the box for Do
not Automatically detect and click next
7. On the left side choose your
service type, and the right side choose your phone and click next
8. Click
finish
9. Click OK out of the General Setup
Now it should work.
Why don't I see my phone on the screen. I only see some general skin.
No skin will show when there is no driver associated with the phone.
When in
Motorola Phone Tools, press the F6 key on your keyboard.
Click the Communication
tab, change modem, then it should run you through redetecting your phone and

When I open Motorola Phone Tools it never goes Ready. It always says please
wait.
1. Make sure you have run the Live Updater. Menus, Setup, Live Update
2.
If there are no further updates for Motorola Phone Tools available, check that
the phone is installed in the Control Panel as a modem. Windows XP: Start,
Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options (you might see Printers and Other
Hardware, then Phone and Modem Options), select the Modems tab. If it is not
installed here, you may need to contact Motorola for a driver or help installing
the phone.
3. Make sure the phone is turned on and active, and is
connected to the computer. You may want to reboot the PC and recycle the power
on the phone (turn it off and then on) as this sometimes resolves the
initialization issues.
4. Using the Device Configuration Wizard, make
sure the Motorola Phone Tools is set to the correct driver. Menus, Setup,
General Setup, Communication tab, select Change Modem, click Next, make sure
your modem is selected and click Next, check 'Do not automatically detect the
driver. Select from a list.' and click Next, choose the correct Manufacturer and
Model for you phone and click Next, click Finish. In General Setup,
Communication, check the Exclusive Use box, answer yes to the window that
appears, and click OK at the bottom.
In Motorola Phone Tools the Bluetooth wizard isn't installing my phone.
1. You need to make your phone discoverable - On many phones you do this by
going through the phones menu, then selecting Settings, Connection, Bluetooth
Link, Setup, you will then see Find Me highlighted on the menu, and make it
discoverable for 60 seconds (These settings may vary by phone)
2. On
your PC go to My Bluetooth Places and click View Devices in Range from the My
Bluetooth Places window.
3. Devices in range will show up and you should
see a your phone. Right-click on your phone and left-click Pair Device. On the
screen you should be prompted to enter a PIN code to ensure a secure connection,
enter a code you would like to use.
4. Your phone will now ask you if
you would like to pair with the computer, select Yes, then Enter the PIN code
you entered on your computer in step 3
5. Your device is now paired and
should show in Control Panel as a modem. Please check if the phone is installed
as a Bluetooth modem in Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, Modems tab. If
you do not see it installed as a Bluetooth modem you need to follow steps that
are listed below. If it is showing as a BlueTooth Modem in Control Panel,
proceed to step 6.
a. Close all programs. Double-click on the Bluetooth
Places or Bluetooth Neighborhood and double-click on your phone.
b. You
should see an option for Dialup Networking or Dialup Internet. Double-click on
this option and when it asks for the user information and password you will need
to press cancel.
c. Confirm that a Bluetooth modem is now installed: Now
you will want to close out of the screens you have open and go to the control
panel, Phone and Modem Options, click on the modems tab and see what is listed
now. If the Bluetooth Modem is listed then you will continue with step 6.
6. From here, go ahead and Launch Motorola Phone Tools (and in some
versions go ahead and make a new profile).
7. If the Setup wizard
appears, Cancel out of here. If it asks to install your phone tell it no.
8. Motorola Phone Tools should launch.
9. Press the F6 key to go
into the manual setup, click the Communication tab, then click the Change Modem
button.
10. A device detection should occur which will identify your
phone and give you a Next button. Click Next.
11. A configuration
completion window should appear stating that it has setup your phone, with a
Bluetooth connection. Click Finish then click OK on the Setup window. Motorola
Phone Tools should now be setup to work with your phone over
Bluetooth.
